About the report:
The fifth ranking of the largest Polish companies of key importance for the economy. Due to the Russian agression on Ukraine and the growing tensions between China and the USA, the main topic of the report for 2022 is the activities undertaken by companies to enhance the national security. We define them not only in the military dimension, but broaden also on the matters concerning energy, health, food and cybersecurity. We describe the important role that national champions, i.e. state-owned companies and private companies, play in this respect. The ranking was prepared on the basis of the proprietary index of national champions (NC index). It consists of the average score in four key categories: economy, industry, foreign and innovation. Additionally, due to the fifth anniversary of the report we presents also a special ranking summarising all the previous editions. The report was prepared on the basis of data for 2021.
Key conclusions:
- The winner of the 2022 edition of the ranking, as in the previous year, is PKN Orlen, which achieved the highest NC index in the history - 90 points.
- PKN Orlen was followed by KGHM "Polska Miedź" (2nd place) and Grupa Azoty (3rd place). For the first time ever all of these companies were classified as "International Champions" achieving more than 75 points.
- In the "Economy" category the winner is KGHM, while there are three ex aequo leaders in the "Sector" classification - KGHM, KRUK S.A. and PKN Orlen. In the "International Presence" category Asseco Poland takes a trophy while the winner of "Innovation" category is Polpharma.
- The average NC index in the 2022 ranking dropped to 43 points. This is higher than in the 2018 edition (40 pts) but lower than last year (45 pts). The reduction reflects the impact of the pandemic recession on the growth of most businesses and the opportunities for foreign expansion.
- Pandemic disturbances also caused a record-breaking extent of changes on the list of 50 national champions. This year saw as many as 10 new capital groups, five of which joined our ranking for the first time ever (Press Glass, Drutex, PERN, Neuca and Euro-Net), as well as three companies returning to the top of the list (Węglokoks, Cognor Holding and Polenergia).
- In the special five-year ranking, Asseco Poland, KGHM and PKN Orlen (winner) were ranked on the podium. The all-time leaders in the following categories were: KGHM (Economy), PKN Orlen (Sector), Asseco Poland (International presence) and Polpharma (Innovation). Over the last five years, SELENA FM achieved the highest advancement in the ranking - by as much as 31 points.
